SEPTEMBER 2016 CHAPTER MEETING

Theme: DATA SCIENCE FOR SYSTEMS ENGINEERING

 

Dr. James Short of the UCSD San Diego Supercomputer Center (SDSC) will deliver a presentation on a course on Data Science for Systems Engineering that is currently being developed through a collaboration between UCSD and the San Diego INCOSE chapter.  He will be joined by co-contributors to the development of the course.  The presentation will be followed by a special tour of the data center at the SDSC.  This meeting is meant to be interactive so try to think of scenarios that Systems Engineers encounter in which Data Science could be useful.  The scenario you suggest could become a case study for the course!

All interested parties are welcome and encouraged to attend. Broad participation is good for everyone! Dinner will be provided ($5 for members, $10 for non-members).  The doors to the facility close at 5.  There will be someone at the lobby to greet attendees and let them into the building until the meeting starts at 5:30.Due to this, if you are going to be late please email info@sdincose.org prior to 5:30 pm so arrangements can be made to let you in.

Speaker Bio: Dr. Short is Research Director for the Global Information Industry Center (GIIC). His areas of research include information value and IT strategy, business process and business network redesign, IT forecasting and market transparency, and disclosure in technology businesses. His work has been widely published in academic and industry publications.

Dr. Short holds degrees from MIT and was Visiting Associate Professor at the MIT Sloan School of Management. He has held posts at the London Business School (LBS) and the Harvard Kennedy School of Government, where he was a Fellow in the Belfer School of Science and Technology. Dr. Short has also taught in the management information systems (MIS) programs at Boston University and the Theseus Institute, Sophia Antipolis, France. He is active in academic and industry professional associations.

Directions to SDSC:

To Hopkins Parking Structure from Interstate 5:

·         Exit Genesee, turn West off exit. (From the south, turn left. From the north, turn right.)
* Note: intersection is currently under a long term construction project. Please allow extra time.

·         At the top of the hill, turn left at North Torrey Pines Road.

·         At the first light, turn left on Northpoint Drive into the UC San Diego campus.

·         Follow Northpoint Drive past the campus Information Booth.

·         Continue on Northpoint as it turns right and becomes Hopkins Drive.

·         Turn right on Voigt Drive (South of RIMAC and SDSC).

·         Enter the Hopkins Parking Structure at the top of the hill (Level 6).

To Pangea Parking Structure from Interstate 5 South:

·         Take Genesee Avenue exit

·         Right on Genesee

·         Left on North Torrey Pines Rd

·         Left on Pangea Drive

·         Left on Scholars Drive North

·         Left into the Pangea parking structure

To Pangea Parking Structure from Interstate 5 North:

·         Take Genesee Avenue exit

·         Left on Genesee

·         Left on North Torrey Pines Rd

·         Left on Pangea Drive

·         Left on Scholars Drive North

·         Left into the Pangea parking structure

Parking: BUY A PARKING PASS!!!! The UCSD parking attendants are very good at writing very expensive parking tickets ($65)within minutes of passes expiring.  We recommend you pay for a little extra time to avoid the pain of an expensive ticket later.
